April 10 –

Brusho/Watercolor with artist Karen Kappell

A common thread which runs through my art, no matter what the media, is my fascination with nature and observation and expression of the natural beauty with which we are surrounded: from the close view of a single flower to the broad vista of open lakes and sky.  I purposely choose to live in a quiet area to be immersed in nature and the solitude which it offers. Drawing inspiration from nature, I work mainly with water media: both watercolor and acrylics because they offer the opportunity to use transparency and layering of color.  Teaching of different mediums has led to a multi-media approach to art and use of various techniques within the same piece.

Brusho is an intense paint powder. We will be using them in creating backgrounds for blocked out areas of leaves or flowers. It allows for fast and stunning expressive backgrounds with minimum fuss. After the background is dry, we will remove the block out material and paint the subject in regular watercolor techniques.

Different containers of a variety of Brusho colors will be provided. Block out paper material will also be provided.

Participants need to bring watercolors, brushes, and stretched 140# cold press watercolor paper or 140 cold press watercolor blocks having a size of 11×15 or 10×14, a container for water, and a scissors to cut the block out paper.  One might like to bring photo references of subjects to paint.  The paper is quite wet and this calls for a stretched sheet to avoid buckling and puddling. Coverings for tables will be provided.

There is a material supply fee of $5 paid directly to the artist.

Registration deadline is Wednesday, April 3rd.

Pictures are samples of the technique.

Creating Gems from Wood with Artist Dave Bricco

My name is Dave Bricco, I am 69 years old and live in Eagle River. My passion started 40 years ago restoring driftwoods to their natural beauty for professional Master Taxidermists. I now make jewelry along with other items out of exotic woods from around the world. I take a piece of wood then sped hours sanding and polishing it until it looks like a gems stone, some people have called them Woodstone. Many people believe my pieces are stone until they hold them.

I love sharing what I do and as far as I know I am the only person who does this. I have done a couple workshops before and enjoy sharing with other artists. I bring everything needed to complete a Woodstone piece for all attendees. I will walk you through every step of this process. Because what I do take days to finish, I will prep pieces up to the finale steps that we will do together. All my pieces have a Tung Oil finish that takes 5 days, I will provide Tung Oil for everyone to take home.

If anyone is on Facebook I have a page where you can view my work and the variety of options. My page is not a sales page but, people do ask me to make items for them through it. My page is 1 of 1 Driftwood Creations, twice a year for the last 9 years I have had a drawing for those who like this page, one person wins a piece of my work.

There is a $25.00 material fee paid directly to the artist.

Registration deadline, Wednesday, September 4th.

Guest Artist Dale Popovich

Join us at the Hazelhurst Community Center, 7020 Hwy 51,

south of Minocqua for

Following the Patterns of Lights and Darks

Dale L. Popovich IWS, an award-winning watercolorist and teacher, is renowned for his ability to capture the essence of the American landscape with the fluid stroke of a brush. More than 49 years ago, Dale lost 80% of his vision. He learned to rely on his mind’s eye to sustain himself. He underwent a nine-hour major brain surgery to remove a cyst on his optic nerve. Afterwards, he had to relearn how to walk, climb stairs, and write again. Despite the challenges, Dale persevered, and with his vision finally restored, he discovered that he could see more clearly than before efficiently filtering out the visual “noise” around him to focus on a subject’s essentials. Dale’s paintings began to reflect a certain purity of perception, and this “way of seeing” became the hallmark of his work.  Spending his childhood summers in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, Dale learned to love its colors, textures, denizens, and moods – and developed his holistic approach to watercolor. Today, his paintings celebrate these American landscapes and man’s humble efforts to tame them. Dale received his training at the American Academy of Art in Chicago. Dale is currently an esteemed faculty member at the Palette & Chisel Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago.

In this watercolor workshop you will be creating a painting without a preliminary sketch. The main emphasis of this painting will be to highlight the interplay of light and dark patterns. You, the artist will rely solely on your intuition and creativity to bring this piece to life. While living in Guam throughout the 90’s, Karen took several watercolor classes at the University of Guam with watercolorist Cynthia Schubert of the Hawaii Watercolor Society. Returning to the states in 1998, Karen continued watercolor classes with many accomplished artists and was able to attend many demonstrations at Dillman’s. She also enjoyed working with wood and took several woodcarving classes. The fun of wood carving and watercolor painting came together when she tried to buy a hardshell gourd to make a birdhouse. Karen found mountains of information on gourds and their adaptability to multiple art forms and was immediately hooked by the fun of construction and the beauty of the finished gourd. She cleans, sands, cuts, dyes, paints, pyro-engraves and carves hardshell gourds into art pieces and functional vessels, vases, bowls, birdhouses, masks and percussion instruments.
