Our story
In 1965, Phyllis Blazkowski founded the loosely formed "Woodruff Art Club." In 1975, students from her classes formed the Lakeland Art League, holding their first official meeting that February. The name reflects the northern Wisconsin lakes and woods that members have long declared the inspiration for their art. Early members met at the Woodruff town hall with an elected board, and in January 1979 a demonstration by Carolien Ashburn — who ran a ceramic business at the Senior Center — gave the growing club a lasting place to meet.
In March 1986, under the direction of Doug Spicer, Articles of Incorporation were filed and the group formally became The Lakeland Art League, Inc. It met for many years at the Minocqua Senior Center until a fire destroyed the building; since 2020 the league has gathered in Hazelhurst, just south of Minocqua. Today it thrives with a healthy membership, a variety of workshops and multiple exhibits each year.
Artists of every level are welcome — join the league or drop us a line.
